Every year, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) issues letters to people in receipt of the State Pension or benefits to let them know how much their payments will be after the annual uprating has been applied in April.

Everyone over State Pension age (66) will receive this letter, and Labour peer Lord Davies of Brixton, has confirmed that they are now being issued as he received his last week.Millions of older people in receipt of the New or Basic State Pension are set for a significant boost this year when most payments will rise by 8.5 per cent from April 8.

This means that someone on the full New State Pension will see payments go up from £203.85 per week to £221.20 and as payments are typically made every four weeks, this amounts to £884.80 each pay period.Similarly, someone on the full rate of the Old or Basic State Pension will see payments go up from £156.20 per week to £169.50 - this amounts to £678 each pay period. However, during the Social Security Up-rating Order debate on Wednesday, Lord Davies told fellow peers that there was a “ touch of unreality” about the debate as he had already received confirmation that his State Pension would be rising in April. He said: “There is a touch of unreality about this discussion, because I received notification of my increased State Pension last week and there was nothing in there to suggest that it was subject to any further parliamentary process.”Lord Davies shared concerns that many people may not be aware that not all elements of the State Pension will rise by 8.5% - the earnings growth element of the Triple Lock measure - and pointed out that “everything else” attached to the State Pension will rise in-line with the September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation
