A short procedure that reduces the size of the stomach without invasive surgery has been labelled "safe and effective" for NHS use.

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), otherwise known as an 'accordion procedure', sees a patient have a flexible tube with a camera inserted into them.

Medical instruments are then used in the stomach via the patient's mouth while sections of the stomach are folded and stitched together, resulting in a tube-like sleeve that aids the patient in feeling fuller more quickly.

The procedure only takes around 90 minutes and patients are generally able to go home on the same day, with the results being reversible if needed.
