Morrisons and Asda join supermarkets making huge change to tills after customer feedback
manchestereveningnews.co.ukMorrisons will be removing some self-checkouts from stores following feedback from customers. It comes as Morrisons' chief executive Rami Baitieh admitted to The Telegraph that the supermarket chain "went a bit too far" in adopting the technology.
The company said it is re-evaluating the mix of self-service and staffed checkouts. Mr Baitieh explained that Morrisons is "reviewing the balance between self-checkouts and manned tills" indicating a shift away from automated tills. This had the advantage of driving some productivity. However, some shoppers dislike it, mainly when they have a full trolley." He acknowledged that while the increase in self-checkout technology had led to greater staff productivity by freeing them for other tasks, it also saw a rise in shoplifting incidents.
Approximately 20 stores are expected to see a reduction in self-service tills in the initial phase. A Morrisons store in Brough, Yorkshire, has already taken out four self-service checkouts in favour of traditional manned tills.
