Monty Don has admitted he once lost contact with his parents for six months because of his "irresponsible" life decision. The much-loved gardening gury made the shocking revelation during the BBC's Gardeners' World Magazine podcast. The horticultural pro took a trip down memory lane, recalling the financial challenges that young people face today compared to his own experiences at 26.

Monty shared: "You're not going to be able to do it like I did it. You can't go and buy a house. I got a mortgage at the age of 26 because my brother-in-law played golf with a bank manager of the mortgage company." He laughingly recounted the mortgage story, revealing the jaw-dropping amount: "It was crazy. The mortgage, I can tell you, was for £15,000, and my parents didn't speak to me for six months because they thought it was so irresponsible.

Different times. Different times." Monty has never shied away from talking about his earlier years, famously loaded with "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" and his several expulsions from school.

Now at 69, the face of Gardeners' World since taking over in 2003, Monty has certainly transformed from rebel to revered. After falling in love with gardening at 17, a passion ignited by an "ecstatic moment" whilst sowing carrots, he began his television journey with a segment on ITV's This Morning, reports the Liverpool Echo.
