Like most artists, singer-songwriter JoyRukanza embraces the ebbs and flows of artistry, flourishing in a space where transformation is the only real constant. Raised in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, she’d spend her high school years as a choir captain before making her first forays as a featured artist by 2014; working with artists and producers like Skaiva, Chymamusique, and Tanto Wavie.

For most of her career, Amirtha Kidambi didn’t refer to herself as an activist, in the same way she didn’t consider herself a Carnatic singer despite studying the form for years. Both of these practices, she explained in a 2017 interview, are lifelong callings.

Ninja Tune CEO Adrian Kemp has stepped away from his role pending an internal investigation into allegations against him.The London-based independent record label, founded by Matt Black and Jonathan More, is currently home to acts such as Young Fathers, Black Country, New Road, Kae Tempest and Bonobo.In a statement sent to staff (via Resident Advisor), Ninja Tune confirmed that Kemp would be taking a “step back” while an “independent third-party HR” company investigated the claims.He’ll temporarily depart the CEO role to not “prejudice this investigation in any way”, a letter from his solicitors read (via Mixmag).The details of the allegations are not known currently, but the document stated that Kemp “vehemently denies” the claims.Samantha Sissons, Ninja Tune’s Head Of Marketing, will step up to his role alongside the label’s Head Of Marketing Operations, Tess Kendall.“The outcome of the investigation will be made available upon completion subject to any legal barriers,” according to the statement to staff. “Adrian will continue to work in support of Sam and Tess but with a lower profile.”Kemp has worked at Ninja Tune for over 20 years and became CEO in 2017, per Companies House.Founded in 1990, Ninja Tune is one of dance music’s most successful independent labels.

Last week, Pioneer Works — a hulking warehouse in industrial Red Hook turned concert venue, gallery, and co-working artist space — held an experimental music exhibition, hosting five sets from nine titans of the form. Headlined by Kali Malone and William Basinski, respectively, the two nights of sound presented radically different conceptions of the drone: the sustained tone that is one of music’s most ancient forms (along with the drum beat) but has been a consistent feature of its avant garde for the better part of a century.

The organizers of the 2024 Whitney Biennial have tapped Taja Cheek a.k.a. L’Rain as the guest curator of the event’s performance program. Chrissie Iles and Meg Onlie have tasked Cheek with developing “a performance and sound series in the Museum’s galleries and theater space that represents the forefront of contemporary experimental performance and sound,” according to a press release.
