A stash of 122 Anglo-Saxon pennies, found by two metal detectorists, have been sold at auction for £325,560. The hoard was discovered near Braintree in Essex and is believed to have been buried in 1066, the year of the famous Battle of Hastings between English and Norman armies.
Coin expert Bradley Hopper suggested that the owner of the coins may have died in the battle, which would explain why they were never retrieved.
The coins were sold at Noonans Mayfair in London, nearly doubling their expected sale price of up to £180,000. The money from the sale will be shared between the finders and the landowner.
