Masterplan for improving Dumfries and Galloway transport links signed off

A 20-year masterplan for improving transport links across the region has been signed off by Dumfries and Galloway Council. SWestrans Regional Transport Strategy (RTS) 2023-2042 will set the policy and framework for transport delivery locally and is now being sent to Scottish ministers for approval.

There are 72 aims included in the strategy, such as improved transport networks for rural locations and meeting eco targets, and a seminar was held recently where board members discussed the plans in greater detail.

However, there are some concerns over how much of the strategy can actually be delivered without considerable funding and support.

Nith Councillor John Campbell, who chaired the recent SWestrans board meeting held in the council headquarters, said: “This has been a significant piece of work for the board over the last two years, and the RTS sets out the long term policy context for transport in Dumfries and Galloway up to 2042. “The strategy is ambitious but also flexible to allow transport to play a critical role in the future of our region. “It will be challenging to deliver the priorities within this strategy, but also essential if we are to meet our ambitions. “Therefore delivery will require a combination of actions by Swestrans, Dumfries and Galloway Council, and close working partnership with other key industry bodies.” Douglas Kirkpatrick, the council’s transportation manager and lead officer for SWestrans, added: “It has been a significant piece of work for officers and the board for almost two years.” Karen Jackson, vice chairman of the SWestrans board, said: “It’s great to see this document as, everybody has highlighted, it’s a substantial piece of work. “I think it’s the delivery that will be
