A comforting stew makes for a delightful dinner, especially on a rainy day - and it can be easy to make with the right recipe.One method shared by cooking extraordinaire Mary Berry uses a special ingredient that she says adds an extra-rich layer to the meal.
Beef bourguignon is a type of French stew that puts tender beef, mushrooms, bacon shallots, plenty of herbs and spices in the one dish, all of which is left to braise in red wine.
According to the Bake Off legend, it's the vino that makes the dish. Sharing the recipe in her Simple Comforts cookbook, Mary wrote: “A French classic, this is the ultimate comfort stew, with a warming intense red wine flavour.
The secret is to reduce the red wine first to give a lovely richness to the dish.”The whole recipe takes about 15 minutes to prepare before you leave it to roast in the oven for two hours, making for a low effort meal.
