Appearing on court dressed in a green T-shirt with a shaved head, beard and thin moustache, Plumb spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth.

He remained impassive throughout the hearing and did not enter a plea. The case was referred to Chelmsford Crown Court, where Plumb will appear on November 3 for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

District Judge Caroline Jackson told Plumb he faces “really serious allegations” and remanded him in custody until his next court appearance.
