If you are of a certain vintage, there was nothing like hearing the Glenroe theme tune to give you the Sunday night fear. For those that grew up in the 80s and 90s hearing The By-Road to Glenroe, as it’s officially known, was as clockwork as the Angelus and marked the official end of the weekend and another week of school when you probably hadn’t gotten round to finishing your homework.

Decades later and apparently many ‘Glenroe kids’ are still traumatised by the sound of that tune. The By-Road to Glenroe has cropped up on the public’s radar again after so many years after LIDL used it in its latest rather genius commercial and it’s safe to say that opinion is well and truly, and hilariously, divided.
