Killer who beat Scots backpacker to death denied parole after mobile phone found in cell
dailyrecord.co.ukA thug who murdered a Scottish backpacker in New Zealand has been denied parole after being caught with a mobile phone behind bars.Jahche Broughton, who was just 14 when he brutally beat Karen Aim to death with a baseball bat, claimed he used the device to check out media coverage of his conviction.The killer also said he used it to “play music” while serving his sentence for the brutal murder of the 26-year-old from Orkney, who died in January 2008.
In 2009, Brought was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 12-and-a-half years, the New Zealand Herald reports.
He became eligible for parole in 2020 but has been denied release on multiple occasions.It has now been revealed the killer’s latest freedom bid has been rejected after he was caught with the phone, charger and sim card in March this year.Parole Board chairman Sir Ron Young said: “He had used them over the previous month or so to check on what was said about his offending on the internet and also to play music.“Obviously, this was a serious failure by Mr Broughton.
It is hard for us to know exactly how Mr Broughton has been using the phone. We have nothing other than his word currently.”Sir Ron said Broughton had been “off privileges” for 28 days as punishment for the contraband and that the board would not see him again until October 2024.He added: “We had a number of further discussions with Mr Broughton about his background, the offending and the rehabilitation he has completed.“Without going into great detail about the discussion, we came away with the strong feeling that it is very difficult to know when Mr Broughton is telling the Board the truth and when he is lying.“Three examples: firstly, he still maintains (another person)
