The partner of a young mum who died in childbirth has spoken for the first time of his devastation. Sabine Mukanga was just 28 years old and excitedly looking forward to the birth of her baby daughter with her partner, Robert Lawani.

But seven months into the pregnancy, Sabine was taken to hospital complaining of heartburn and feeling unwell. Both Sabine and their baby daughter died soon after and an inquest earlier this month found Sabine had died from internal bleeding.

The NHS trust was criticised for ‘shortcomings', but the coroner ruled that even addressing those issues would tragically have not altered the outcome for Sabine.

Robert is now raising their children, aged 7 and 4, alone. Sabine was laid to rest with their baby daughter, Princetta, in her arms.
