In a statement, they said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.” Sinéad is known to have suffered years of mental health battles – she said they were as a result of being physically and sexually abused by her mother as a child. The singer first shot to fame in 1990 with an emotional cover of Prince's song, Nothing Compares 2 U.

Sinéad made the song her own and topped the charts in countries around the world. The simple, yet unforgettable, accompanying video featured almost nothing else but a close-up shot of the shaven-headed singer performing the ballad with tears rolling down her cheeks.

Her passing comes just a year and a half after the tragic death of her son, Shane. In January last year, police in Ireland said they had recovered a body in the Bray area of Wicklow and their appeal for a missing teenager – Sinéad's son, Shane, 17 – had ended. It's believed he took his own life after leaving hospital while on suicide watch.
