Inside Out 2 introduced more complex emotions like Anxiety, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Envy, and writer Meg LeFauve recently revealed the other emotions that didn’t make the cut.
In a recent interview, LeFauve said that characters Shame and Guilt almost joined the film, but they were ultimately scrapped. “We had a fisherman for ideas named Gail, and we went to the Facts and Opinions factory and saw how those were made.
And that was super fun,” LeFauve said in an interview with ComicBook. “I think in terms of emotionally, we really tried for quite a while to have Shame in the movie and Guilt.” LeFauve said the writers talked to experts about these emotions and described Shame as “being more self-loathing, that thing that attacks you,” adding, “The difference with shame is really not a great thing for you because it is just about attacking you.
Whereas guilt is about taking responsibility and it’s a behavior, not who you are.” The Inside Out 2 writer said the emotions “never quite clicked” as the center of the story was around Anxiety. “I do think we all have that self-loathing critic in our head, and we got to go there a little bit with the projections and how Anxiety can start to do that to you,” LeFauve said. “So I think it’s in the movie, but that was one thing we explored that we didn’t ultimately feel was fruitful for this version.” Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann also weighed in on ideas that didn’t make the cut and revealed his hopes that Procrastination Land would make it into a potential third film. “One of my favorites is a location that we came up with called Procrastination Land,” Mann told ComicBook. “This is the land I definitely have, especially as a teen.
