Supermodel Cindy Crawford has made hundreds of millions and is one of the world's most photographed women. She started modelling in her teens for local department stores in Illinois, at the same time as becoming valedictorian in high school.

When she moved to New York, she became one of the most sought after catwalk models and eventually a brand in her own right. In the 1980s, along with pals Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista, Cindy became known as a supermodel.

But her formative years were shaped when her little brother Jeffery died of leukaemia when he was just three years old. Cindy, who also has two sisters, was nine. “My sisters and I felt like it should have been one of the girls.

As opposed to the only boy,” she says on her new Apple TV+ documentary The Super Models. She struggled to grieve but now acknowledges that Jeffery’s death left her determined to achieve. “I think we felt pressure to be perfect kids, which probably served me well in life.” Cindy's career took off when modelling agency Elite signed her up for its Look Of The Year contest in 1983, which saw 200 young women competing against each other in Acapulco, Mexico. “When I look back it was probably pretty not woke but at the time it felt like an audition,” says Cindy.
