Millions of people have been warned by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) that they need to act this week or face the risk of being fined £100.

The deadline for people to submit their self-assessment tax return is January 31. HMRC expects more than 12 million returns to be filed - but so far only 8.3 million have been received.

People who do not file on time face an initial £100 fixed penalty - which will even apply if there is not tax to pay or if the tax due is paid on time. After six months there is a further penalty of 5 per cent of the tax due or £300, whichever is higher. After 12 months, there is another 5 per cent or £300 charge, whichever is more.
