Rural residents in Highland Perthshire have had no choice but to drive a 30-mile detour around a mountain after a key rural road collapsed.

The narrow C448 route between Glenlyon and Woodend crumbled on Sunday amidst the weekend’s torrential rain.A chunk of tarmac succumbed to the harsh elements, plummeting down to the River Lyon below. The road was then closed cutting off the shortest route to Glenlyon, Kenmore and Aberfeldy for those west of the collapse. Now many have had to double back around Ben Lawers - a diversion of at least 30 miles.Judy Delin and husband Tim of nearby West Cottage and Stables have had to warn customers about the road closure.Judy said: “It is just not passable and is now blocked off.

It needs to be dealt with really quickly.”The couple fear that if the road is not repaired and reopened in the next two weeks the annual snowfall could leave them boxed in.A public meeting was held at the nearby Glen Lyon Tea Room at 5pm yesterday to hear local concerns. The impact on the Glenlyon Primary School runs, local businesses, deliveries, movement of livestock, bin collections, access to medical care and emergency service access are top of the agenda.Highland ward councillor John Duff has been liaising with council officers from the Roads Maintenance Partnership to ensure that repairs are given “top priority”.On Thursday, a council spokesperson confirmed “preliminary works” had begun and is expected to take around two weeks to be completed. They added: “This will involve formation of a turning area for lorries delivering materials and creation of a temporary road to allow access to the embankment affected by a landslip for the necessary repairs to it.“At this time, whilst we are working to get the road opened
