Helen Skelton has shared a shocking story about choosing a "cute" guinea pig for her lunch. The former Blue Peter presenter, 40, known for her daring adventures such as kayaking along the Amazon and cycling to the South Pole, made the revelation during an episode of the Spooning with Mark Wogan podcast.
She recalled the incident from a charity trip to Peru in 2011, where she was filming with charities educating children who worked on rubbish dumps.
Helen said: "And so the charity were trying to get them into schools and they were showing us their wonderful work and as part of showing us what happened they took us out for lunch." Helen shared that she was taken to "the middle of nowhere" and shown a "big garden" full of guinea pig hutches, which she thought was "cute" before discovering what was coming next.
She explained: "I was enthusiastic because they were proud and I was being respectful. I thought they were just showing me their guinea pigs, I didn't realise that I was picking my lunch!" She then revealed her chosen guinea pig was "spatchcocked and deep fried".To which Hellen added: "I can't say that's wrong, it's their world." Helen also mentioned that the guinea pig was served with coleslaw on the side, claws still intact. "It was a delicacy, they were really proud," she noted.
