A £1 million facelift for Kirktonholme Pitches is close to completion and the new surface is set to get its first run out with a friendly featuring former Rangers and Celtic stars.East Kilbride United (which comprises East Kilbride YM and East Kilbride Youth Club) are nearing the end of phase two of their improvements at Kirktonholme, following a summer of pitch relaying and the installation of a new 75-seater, covered stand and floodlights.Work should be completed towards the end of this month and a friendly which will involve “secret ex-Old Firm stars” will celebrate the official launch of the surface, which has been switched from grass to a state of the art artificial pitch. The latest development is the second part of a three-phase upgrade to the facility behind East Kilbride train station.

Phase One consisted of a modern Sports Bar Social Club/Cafe in the pavilion with improved disability facilities. It also included solar panels over the full roof area to reduce the club’s carbon footprint. That was completed at a cost of £325,000, funded by the Scottish Football Association, CARES Scotland, South Lanarkshire Council’s Renewable Energy Fund and Levelling Up fund.Phase Two is due to be completed on Friday, July 19, and consists of a new artificial surface full-sized pitch, stand and additional parking spaces at a cost of almost £1 million.

There will also be standing areas for spectators on both sides of the pitch.Phase Three is ongoing as plans are in place to add two modern dressing rooms to accommodate the additional use, as the new pitch will allow for much greater use by community groups.
