Police say up to 200 souped-up sports cars took part in the get together, which began in a car park in Pilsworth, Bury at about 7pm, before travelling through Middleton and into Manchester.
One witness, who saw the procession as it passed through Middleton, said: "There was helicopters, riot vans, and police bikes blocking off junctions.
It was carnage. "Traffic was backed up for miles and petrol stations packed out nearby. The police were absolutely everywhere."
