Greater Manchester is bracing itself for a very damp weekend as forecasters warn almost a month's worth of rain could fall in just 48 hours in parts of the UK.

July has so far been blighted by intermittent thunderstorms and heavy downpours and experts are warning people to expect more unseasonal conditions on Saturday and Sunday.

Stephen Dixon, a spokesman with Met Office, said: "In 48 hours from Saturday, we could get up to 60mm in places, such as western areas so parts of Scotland, west Wales and potentially parts of northern England. "The average rainfall for the UK for July is 82.5mm, but that's the average and it rains more, typically, in some places, like Scotland, anyway." After a dry start to the day in most areas, the showers could begin rolling in as early as this lunchtime (Friday).

There is the possibility of some heavy downpours in the region on and off from midday to around 3pm, though there will likely be some dry and sunny spells in between.
