Erik ten Hag refused to criticise Anthony Martial after his substitution was cheered by some Manchester United supporters in their 3-0 humbling by Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
Martial was a surprise starter ahead of Rasmus Hojlund but he made way for the Dane in the 56th minute with United 1-0 down.
The 28-year-old's removal in the 3-0 League Cup home ejection by Newcastle last month elicited cheers and the striker's approval ratings plumbed to new depths against Bournemouth.
Martial has not completed 90 minutes in the Premier League since January 2021 and he has only scored 18 United goals since the start of the 2020-21 season. "He absolutely has the competencies and abilities to play, so I don't think it's fair after a performance like this to go to one player, we as a group failed altogether." Martial is approaching the final six months of his contract and United must decide whether to trigger the one-year extension in his deal.
