Former Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman, who hosted on the station from 2003 - 2014, paid her own tribute to the star with a heartfelt message on Instagram as she said: "RIP wonderful Annie...paved the way for so many of us and continued to trailblaze for a lifetime."Announcing Annie's death, her family said in a statement: "Annie Nightingale MBE passed away yesterday at her home in London after a short illness.
Annie was a pioneer, trailblazer and an inspiration to many. Her impulse to share that enthusiasm with audiences remained undimmed after six decades of broadcasting on BBC TV and radio globally."It continued: "Never underestimate the role model she became.
