Dramatic footage reveals massive haul of cannabis after eleven people arrested with suspicious-looking suitcases

As the camera pans down the corridor, black, brown, red, blue and grey suitcases stand side by side. Above them, on a long table, huge plastic bags are piled up high.

In them is a whopping haul of over 500 kilos of cannabis. Minutes before, eleven people were stopped at Birmingham Airport. They were all arrested on suspicion of importing class B drugs into the country. Officials have revealed that so far in 2024 around 15 tonnes of the drug has been uncovered at airports, compared to five tonnes throughout the whole of 2023, and two tonnes in 2022.

A total of 136 suspects were arrested in 2023, while 378 have been detained so far this year. Officials at the NCA say overproduction of the drug in countries where it has been legalised, and the chance of bigger profits in the UK market, may be behind the rise.
