A desperate mother, whose autistic son has been locked in hospital for seven years, is today bringing his fight for freedom to the Scottish Government.Sylvia McMahon’s son Jamie Henry was admitted to hospital in 2016 aged 19 and has, she argues, been left in an environment which has only added to his challenges.
Today, the Paisley mum is joining families from across Scotland at Holyrood to demand better for their children.They are calling on ministers to end the practice of placing distressed neurodivergent and vulnerable people in high security psychiatric wards.
Instead, they want to see them supported to live full and happy lives in the community surrounded by their loved ones.For Jamie, Sylvia’s only child, that fight has lasted seven years.
The 26-year-old is currently a patient in Woodland View Hospital – a psychiatric hospital in Irvine, North Ayrshire, where his mum says he has been left to “rot”.She said: “Autistic people do not cope with the environment and demands of a psychiatric hospital.
