Controversial cuts proposed at two fire stations in Greater Manchester have been scrapped, with plans to increase cover in the city centre set to go ahead.

Plans to stop manning Sale and Offerton stations at night were proposed as part of a review by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS).

As part of the plans, fire cover will increase at Manchester Central in response to the growing population and increase in high-rise buildings.

Major changes to existing specialist rescue stations at Leigh and Ashton are also in the plans. Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has now confirmed that the plans will go ahead, but the stations in Stockport and Trafford will continue to be manned 24-hours-a-day.
