Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees gets under way Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. PT with 12 panels featuring some of the year’s biggest crowd-pleasing movies as well as its most artistic critical hits.

This final round of Contenders events this Oscar season features virtual Q&A panels with the on-screen stars, creatives and craftspeople behind 12 of the films that will be going for gold at the Dolby Theater less than a month from now.

Streaming Contenders events has opened up a whole new global audience, and also offers quick and convenient access to filmmakers who are either dealing with busy production schedules or, as is the case with several of the panels here, based in locations all around the world.

In that respect, Contenders is here to bust open the myth that the Academy Awards are solely a vehicle for the American film industry: you’ll see we have films today from Italy, Poland, Sweden, Argentina, Ireland and Germany.

Oe Kenzaburo, Nobel Prize-Winning Japanese Author, Dies at 88
Mark Schilling Japan Correspondent Japanese author Oe Kenzaburo, the winner of the 1994 Nobel Prize in Literature, has died at age 88. His date of death, ascribed to old age, was March 3. A total of six films have been made from Oe’s work, most recently the 2001 “Gibier d’élevage,” a reworking of “The Catch” by Cambodian director Rithy Panh. Born in 1935 in Ehime Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Oe began writing while still a student of French literature at the University of Tokyo. Not long after graduating in 1957, he published “The Catch,” a novella about a Black American airman who finds himself captured by rural Japanese villagers in the waning days of the war. It won the prestigious Akutagawa Prize and was made into a 1961 film by Japanese Nouvelle Vague auteur Oshima Nagisa.

‘Stalker 2’ studio asks fans to ignore leaks following pro-Russian hack

Comedian Roy Wood Jr. Set to Host African American Film Critics Association Awards
Julia MacCary editor The African American Film Critics Association has set producer and comedian Roy Wood Jr. to host its 14th annual AAFCA Awards, set for March 1 at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills. Wood’s credits include “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” “Sullivan and Son” and “The Neutral Ground,” as well as his upcoming mini-series “The Pendulum Project.” The Emmy-nominated producer is also featured in “Better Call Saul,” “Only Murders in the Building” and “The Last O.G.” Variety included Wood as one of its 10 Comics to Watch in 2016. “AAFCA is excited to have the multi-talented Roy Wood Jr. host the 14th edition of the AAFCA Awards,” AAFCA president and CEO Gil Robertson said in a statement. “Roy is one of the most electrifying comedic voices in our business. He’s funny, insightful and irreverent and we’re looking forward to a fabulous evening of fun and celebration.”

Courteeners, English Teacher and Louis Tomlinson were among the acts to be honoured at the first-ever Northern Music Awards.The inaugural ceremony – hosted by the UK’s largest music therapy charity, Nordoff And Robbins – took place at the Albert Hall in Manchester last night (April 23) to celebrate northern artists, festivals, venues and industry figures.Presented by BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Chris Hawkins, the event featured live performances from Courteeners frontman Liam Fray, as well as English Teacher, Lisa Stansfield, The K’s and more.Guest presenters from the region included former Manchester United footballer Gary Neville, New Order‘s Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Norris, and Grimsby-born actor Thomas Turgoose (This Is England). ‌ Neville awarded Courteeners with the Band Of The Year prize.
