A cat was saved from drowning after becoming stuck in a deep sewage drain at a Scots cemetery. The moggy was found freezing cold and covered in dirt by an astounded worker cleaning the facilities at Larkhall Cemetery in South Lanarkshire on Saturday, October 22.

Scottish SPCA (SSPCA) officers were called in to rescue the trapped cat. Inspectors worked to hoist the animal up from the deep sewer, saying that if it wasn't for the speedy actions of the worker, she would have likely died from the conditions.Although the female tortoiseshell is now in a stable and healthy condition, the animal welfare charity says she has been left shaken by the ordeal.

Shocking images show the animal stuck deep within the sewage and covered in thick dirt.A search is now underway to trace the cat's owner.SSPCA animal rescue officer Aidan McIver, said: “The cat was stuck down a deep drain, covered in sewage and freezing cold.

We cannot tell how long she was there for. “The cat is female, tortoiseshell in colour and a domestic shorthair. We’re grateful to the person who spotted this cat as if the drain had filled any more it’s likely she would have drowned.“Thankfully we managed to retrieve her and she is now safe at our centre after being bathed and seen by a vet.
