Ben Doak allowed the ball to pass through his legs, spun and collected it as it nutmegged flummoxed Aston Villa defender Lucas Digne just two minutes into the teenager’s Premier League debut.Five thousand miles away in San Jose, California, another young Scot watched, smiled, and remembered seeing Doak do exactly the same thing to 10-year-olds when he was knee high to a grasshopper at Ayr United’s Academy.

Liam Anderson has gone a long way in pursuit of his coaching dream, leaving his native Ayrshire for America’s West Coast, where he is on the staff of Almaden FC.

Doak may not have travelled the same distance in terms of miles but the 17-year-old has reached for the stars and is currently shining as brightly as any of them under Liverpool at Celtic. The 17-year--old winger made his fifth top team appearance on Tuesday night as Liverpool knocked Wolves out of the FA Cup, but having made his debut as a 16-year-old against Derby in the EFL Cup in November, it was his first Premier League appearance at Villa Park that really opened eyes down south to an extraordinary young talent. He only came on in the 88th minute, but the rinsing of Digne - a French international left back with 46 caps - went viral and noted with glee in sunny California by the man who was on the starting grid as Doak’s journey began. “You saw him nutmegging Luca Digne, who has played in the Premier League for a long time and has won a lot of caps for France,” Anderson told Record Sport. "Within a couple of minutes of coming on against a top player, Ben is making moves like that.

He was doing stuff like that when he was eight or nine years old but that doesn’t guarantee that he will be able to do it at the kind of level he is now playing at.
