Andy Burnham would 'consider HGV restrictions' in city centre if re-elected

Andy Burnham says he would consider ‘HGV restrictions’ in the city centre if re-elected mayor. However, the Labour politician has ruled out introducing a charging clean air zone which was scrapped after a furious backlash in 2022.

Instead, the mayor wants to introduce a ‘investment-led approach’ to bringing down air pollution in the city centre by getting more people on Bee Network buses, setting up a fund to upgrade taxis, and improving congestion in the city centre.

The plan — which campaigners have criticised for not bringing pollution down enough — is currently being considered by the government.
