Aldi has explained to customers why it is making changes to 'several' of its products. The supermarket is removing pulp trays and punnets from many of its fruit and vegetable products in a bid to reduce waste.
The changes have been made in several stores already and the retailer has said it could now roll the changes out to all of its UK stores.
Aldi has already removed plastic punnets from packets of its Nature’s Pick Sliced Mushrooms. Plastic trays have also been removed from Nature’s Pick Cherry Tomatoes in some stores, and changes to the packaging of Baby Plum Tomatoes are set to follow, the supermarket said. Luke Emery, Aldi's plastics and packaging director, said: "At Aldi, we are constantly reviewing ways to reduce excess plastic and packaging, and these trials on a range of our fruit and vegetables are the next steps in helping us achieve our goals. "Becoming a more sustainable supermarket is important to not only us, but our customers too, and further reducing packaging is just one of many changes to come." By reducing the number of trays and punnets used in its fresh fruit and vegetable products in all UK stores, Aldi said it would be removing over 370 tonnes of plastic and packaging per year.
