It has served the people of Manchester for years. But very soon, it will be gone forever. The Post Office in Spring Gardens is one of a kind.
When the building was opened in 1969, replacing the 19th century General Post Office at Spring Gardens, it was the largest Post Office in the north.
And while the current building - complete with large post-war style modern murals that hang above the counters - only dates back 55 years, the service has a status and a lineage dating back to Manchester's first, 17th century postmasters. READ MORE: Two lives lost and two campaigns that will lead to lasting change While other city centre branches exist, Spring Gardens is the only Crown Post Office left in Manchester city centre, Crown Post Offices being the larger branches directly managed by the Post Office.
Spring Gardens currently offers a wider range of services than the remaining city centre branches, including passport applications, driving licence renewals and some financial services too.
