A young Scot suffering from rare incurable bone cancer has landed in Japan to begin "life changing" treatment.Shaun Atwal's life was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in February 2021.
The 27-year-old had gone for an X-ray after slipping and falling on an icy street while walking near his home in Lenzie on New Year's Day two years ago.Medics discovered he had broken his humerus bone in the upper arm.
However, two months later - after further tests - it was confirmed that he had Osteosarcoma. Shaun was referred to the Beatson clinic where he underwent chemotherapy and a 12-hour long operation to remove the cancerous bone - which was replaced with metal.
He was in remission for seven months before the cancer returned, and had spread to his spine. Doctors have told him that the cancer is no longer curable.Since then, his family and friends have launched a stoic fundraising effort to get Shaun on immunotherapy treatment in Japan. His sister Luvleen Zaman said that the family hoped the treatment would help give him the best possible chance to be "free of this disease".
