Detectives have launched a murder investigation today after a woman was killed in a house fire. Firefighters, police and paramedics all raced to the scene on Campbell Road in Stoke-on-Trent at around 3pm yesterday.

Tragically, nothing could be done to save the victim who police have confirmed was a 40-year-old woman. The force have launched a murder probe in what they've described as a 'complex investigation', Stoke Sentinel reports.

A forensic tent has been set up in an alleyway while a police cordon remains in place on part of Campbell Road today. Detectives have said officers and officials from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service are likely to be at the scene for a few days to 'establish the exact circumstances of the fire'.

During the height of the incident firefighters from four stations were present at the scene alongside two paramedics officers, two ambulances and the Midland Air Ambulance critical care car.
