Voters will soon be hitting the polls on May 5 to have their say in who they want to represent them in their local council. But not everyone in the UK is allowed to vote in the 2022 local election and there are some steps voters must take before they can vote.
To be eligible there are some criteria that must be met relating to citizenship status, age and the area you live in. First and foremost you must be registered to vote for any election in the UK - you can do so via the government website here .
Unlike Parliamentary general elections, someone in the UK can vote if they hold British, Irish, equal Commonwealth or EU citizenship (excluding the Republic of Ireland, Malta and Cyprus).
