Omicron is now the dominant Covid variant in Scotland - and it is said to be the main driving force behind a recent surge in case numbers.

The Scottish Government yesterday recorded 4,336 new daily Covid infections over the past 24 hours. Nicola Sturgeon told Scots that 54.1 per cent of those cases are believed to have come from the Omicron variant - which was first discovered in South Africa last month.

Health officials believe that the reproduction rate - or the R number - of Omicron could be above four in Scotland. This means that the variant is said to be spreading exponentially among the population.
