Fire chiefs have launched a campaign to ensure nobody dies in water during the coronavirus pandemic. The Be Water Aware initiative is a week-long campaign.
According to the National Fire Chiefs Council, of the 263 people who drowned in 2018, fifty per cent were taking part in every day activities and had no intention of entering the water.
Runners and walkers made up 35 per cent - 93 people - who accidentally drowned. Other incidents were jumping or diving into water, swimming, fishing, and animal rescue.
One of those who died in 2018 was Mark Allen, whose life was cut short when the 18-year-old got into difficulties while swimming in Debdale Reservoir in Gorton.
