Brits planning on holidaying in Spain this summer have been told that they are ‘still welcome’ despite anti-tourism protests.

In recent weeks demonstrations have been held across popular holiday destinations in the Balearic and the Canary Islands. On May 25 around 15,000 people took to the streets of Majorca’s capital Palma in one of the most recent demonstrations.

Protests held signs saying “SOS Tourism” and “Let’s save Majorca, foreigners out” in Catalan. Similar protests were held on the neighbouring islands of Ibiza only 24 hours before.

In April demonstrations took place across the Canary Islands as locals raised concerns over the impact of mass tourism on housing, the environment and jobs.
