UK nuclear submarine deterrent could be 'crippled' by industrial action at Clyde base

Workers at a nuclear submarine base on the Clyde will begin an overtime ban as a row over pay deepens.Unite Scotland said around 70% of its members who provide specialist services for the UK’s nuclear deterrent submarines will start an overtime ban at RNAD Coulport.

The trade union claimed that industrial action could potentially “cripple” the effective running of operations at the naval base.

The base on Loch Long is the storage and loading facility for the nuclear warheads loaded on to submarines, which are based at nearby Faslane.

The Unite membership involved in the dispute are employed by the ABL Alliance – a co-operation between businesses AWE, Babcock Marine (Clyde Ltd) and Lockheed Martin UK Strategic Systems.The three companies
