A new Covid treatment has been approved for use in the UK - and its makers claim that it could stand up to the challenge posed by the Omicron variant.

Xevudy (sotrovimab) was given the green light for use by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) earlier on Thursday.

The treatment, which is administered through intravenous infusion over 30 minutes, can reportedly reduce the risk of death and hospitalisation by 79 per cent in high risk adults with symptomatic Covid infection, according to clinical trials.

It works by binding the spike protein on the outside of the Covid virus. This prevents the virus from attaching to and entering human cells, so that it cannot replicate in the body.
