UK drivers in Spain issued two-week warning before licence deadline

A two-week warning has been issued to UK motorists living in Spain to change their driving licences before the deadline comes around.UK driving licence holders living in Spain must exchange their photocard for a Spanish licence before September 15.

This rule only applies to people living in Spain before March 15, 2023, and failure to adhere to rules could result in drivers unknowingly breaking the law.This news comes after an agreement was made back in March that allowed motorists to swap their licences over in Spain without having to retake a driving test.However, this swap over must be completed before September 15, meaning that drivers have just 14 days to secure a new licence before the deadline.His Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott said: "It is very important that UK licence holders who lived in Spain prior to March 15 2023 and want to drive here exchange their licences on or before September 15. "We want this message to reach as many UK licence holders as possible, so please spread the word and refer to our Facebook page and the Living In Spain Guide on gov.uk for more information."Earlier this year, we reported that drivers had to also be aware of a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) being placed in the cities of Barcelona and Madrid, which could result in fines for clueless motorists.Experts at Airport Parking urged Scots to "do their homework" and research before hitting the Spanish roads, as violating these zones could result in a £176 (€200) fine.
