Even as Pride Month comes to a close, gay people still find themselves the victims of bigoted speech and hate crimes.

Gay rights advocates suspect that gay people murdered in Cape Town’s townships over the past few months were victims of hate crimes. Phelokazi Mqathana, from Khayelitsha Site C, was stabbed to death in May; a 39-year-old male was arrested.

Lonwabo Jack, from Nyanga, was killed in April; a 17-year-old male was arrested. Lulama Mvandaba, from Khayelitsha Makhaza, was murdered two weeks ago; no arrest has been made.
