Supermarkets have more than doubled their profit margins on fuel since the start of the war in Ukraine, according to new analysis.

The RAC has found that Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, and Sainsbury’s were making an average of around 4.7p per litre on fuel sales when the Russian invasion began in February 2022.

However, this figure has now increased to around 10p per litre, resulting in higher pump prices for consumers. In 2016, supermarket fuel margins were much lower at 2.3p per litre.

The drop in fuel prices has contributed to a decrease in the Consumer Prices Index measure of inflation, which fell to 7.9% last month from 8.7% in May.
