Stirlingshire listed mansion looks set to return to a private residence
dailyrecord.co.ukA historic mansion near Balfron looks set to be returned to a single home after years of being used as a school.Ballikinrain School closed at the beginning of 2021 after decades of being run by a social care agency which was part of the Church of Scotland.The school provided care and education services, both boarding and day pupils, for around 35 young people aged six to 16 years who were experiencing social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.Now, however, Stirling Council planners have approved an application by Iain Anderson to turn the B-listed main house from a Class 8 Residential Care Institution to a Single Private Residential Unit (Class 9), subject to a Section 69 legal agreement being concluded.The proposals also include the conversion and extension of a stables building from a Class 8 Residential Care Unit to four Private Residential Units (Class 9) and the erection of two replacement dwellings (Iona and Copsewood cottages) at the school.The main building is a large baronial style mansion designed by David Bryce around 1850.
It is accessed via a private track that has two accesses off the B818 to the west and east of the school. Click here for more news and sport from the Stirling area.
In their decision, the planners said: “The proposed site was previously occupied by Ballikinrain School which closed in 2021 and has been empty since.
The main building and stables are listed whilst other buildings on site are not and have fallen into disrepair.“With this in consideration, overall it is considered there will be significant visual benefits to be had by redeveloping the site.“The proposal also involves the redevelopment of a traditional stables building into four residential units.
