Locals in Spain are using an offensive code word to warn each other when British tourists are nearby. They say "guiri" - which is pronounced "guee-ree".It is understood to mean "fair-skinned" or "blonde" and is a Basque term which describes the tourists by their appearance, but is not used for everyone.Being a Brit doesn't automatically get you branded a guiri.
But locals will refer to you as one if you're a tourist who behaves poorly while abroad. One example of the "guiri" behaviour is excessive drinking, chanting, and other types of loutish behaviour.
You may feel offended if you were called one, but some say locals use the term to describe all tourists. The Mirror reports that locals won't chase you out of town for being one, but they may make fun of you for doing stereotypical "guiri" behaviours like drinking sangria all day or only ordering food like pizza, chips and toasties.
The best way of avoiding the label is to try to integrate into the culture as much as possible and learn a little bit of the language.
