Scotland hit with snow and rain as new warnings in place ahead of New Year

New weather warnings are in place across Scotland after the Met Office issued updates about snow and rain on the last weekend of the year.

Forecasters say an "active frontal system" will bring bouts of heavy snow and rain over Hogmanay and New Year. A number of yellow alerts are in place across the country with some areas expected to see up to 40mm of rain and 20cm of the white stuff over the weekend.

The Met Office has since updated an alert that will see a band of rain and snow extend northeast across southern Scotland on Saturday morning.

Areas affected can expect between 15-40mm of rain fall in a few hours, with up to five centimetres of snow on higher ground.The alert, which is set to remain in place until 3pm today, with forecasters warning of flooding and transport disruption.
