Scotland area crowned top travel destination in 2023 by Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet has revealed its top travel destinations for the year ahead and Scotland has made the list. The iconic travel guide has published its Best in Travel 2023 roundup, which features 30 "must-visit" travel destinations from all across the world.

It predicts which locations will be particularly popular over the next year. Scotland earned a spot on the acclaimed list which featured the entire region of southern Scotland - with the Borders singled out. Each one is informed by expert local perspectives from the cities, countries, and regions included to provide a deeper insight into what they have to offer.

Southern Scotland was placed within the 'Learn' category. Lonely Planet commented: "The new Lumo train offering low-price competition between London and Edinburgh makes accessing Scotland a fast, affordable breeze. "Instead of heading to the Highlands, aim for the Borders and other areas of southern Scotland to learn more about the country’s history and famous residents like writer Robert Burns."
