A community gardening project has become a splash hit with its volunteers after securing water for their premises. The Sandside Gardening Project was launched by Paul McGregor in 2015 and recruits volunteers young and old to grow and tend plants at the venue at the junction of Sunderries Road near Stakeford Street in Dumfries.
They had relied on one member who lived locally to occasionally provide water for plants and vegetables and Paul said: “Now we have our own supply thanks to Scottish Water and a few other people such as the work done by Councillor Andy Ferguson. “Now we have a permanent supply. “It’s the first time that we have had water regularly, really, for eight years.” The gardens recently had electricity installed to help volunteers work at night with floodlighting for plants and even enjoy a cup of tea during breaks.
Paul added: “We would like to thank Border Homes for their work in the water project as well as Scottish Water and, of course, Dumfries and Galloway Council for all their help and assistance with the project. “We are always on the lookout for new members and anyone who wants to join should come along and sign up.”
