The Royal family initially hoped the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes’ 2020 departure from royal duties would prove the 'solution' for future generations of non-working Royals - before talks derailed.
The claims are derived from an extract of royal reporter Valentine Low’s new book, Courtiers: the Hidden Power Behind the Crown, which has been serialised in The Times and sheds new light on what happened behind the scenes during Megxit.
Over several days in January 2020, the book reports. talks were held between the private secretaries and communications secretaries from the four royal households with the hopes of thrashing out a deal that suited both sides.
Up to five different scenarios were proposed, according to Low, ranging from Harry and Meghan spending the majority of their time as working royals with a month each year for themselves to doing a select number of royal activities with a large proportion of their time spent privately. "There was, according to more than one source, a positive atmosphere in the room: they wanted to find a solution," writes Low in an extract published by The Times. The thinking from some was that should they be successful, the agreement they reached would provide a blueprint for future Royals out of the direct line of succession.
