Princess Anne came to Manchester today - all for a very special cause, new to the city. Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal officially unveiled a new, lifesaving helipad at the NHS site on Oxford Road, in Manchester city centre.
The unveiling was then followed by a visit to Greater Manchester midwives, maternity support workers, doctors, and new families at Saint Mary's Hospital. READ MORE Miracle baby girl born premature with 'double bubble' condition survives three operations to celebrate first birthday The helipad is the first of its kind in the North West - enabling critically ill patients to be airlifted straight to the hospitals in Manchester city centre, has been used by the air ambulance service more than 70 times since opening in May 2021.
The helipad allows patients to be seen within minutes by trauma specialists which can be vital to help save lives and improve outcomes during time critical situations.
The Princess Royal today, March 2, came to the in her role as Patron of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM). As well as unveiling the helipad, The Princess Royal also visited the Antenatal Clinic and Delivery Suite at Saint Mary’s Hospital, which won the Royal College of Midwives Midwifery Service of the Year Award in 2021.
